It is very normal to fart once in a while, but it is better not to let it happen in company. Did you miss one? Let’s say: when you are at the gym? Then it is good to know that you are not the only one who suffers from these unwanted winds during training.
Effect of a workout
It’s not the most desirable situation to be in: farting while exercising. Now there are several reasons why this phenomenon can take place. So it not only happens to you, but also to others. So explains sports expert Kate Kraschnefski On Body and Soul out that it happens simply because you move. “Flats can occur especially when we perform movements from the trunk, which can put pressure on our gastrointestinal tract.”
And then we also have our metabolism. When we exercise regularly, it can kick-start our metabolism. We all know that a well-functioning metabolism ensures good digestion. And good digestion, which does indeed cause some flatulence. Not super windy, but one booty a puff or two is not uncommon.
Prevent
It is therefore quite normal – and healthy – to fart during exercise. Although we can imagine that you prefer to prevent this phenomenon if you adopt the downward dog during a yoga class. According to Kraschnefski, you can partly prevent it by not moving too much from your trunk during your workout. In other words: don’t bend and twist too much.
In addition, nutrition also plays a role. For example, Kraschnefski advises that you should not eat too much fiber-rich food just before exercising, such as beans. It’s also best not to eat anything 90 minutes before your workout if you want to avoid the gasses. Of course you shouldn’t go to the gym in a hurry either. If you’re hungry, you’re just hungry, and the best thing to do is just listen to your body.
And if you do miss a wind, remember: it’s a normal bodily function.
