Athletics fans have been able to enjoy an unusual edition at the MNew York araton in its 2022 edition. Not because the streets were filled again with some 50,000 runners or to recover the atmosphere in the American city, but because Daniel Do Nascimento, one of the favorites, chose to break with everything established and present an unknown plan in the great competitions of the 42.195 kilometers. In the women’s competition there was also excitement and intrigue with the numerous changes in the lead in the last leg of a race that the rookie won Sharon Lokedi with comeback
Nothing to wait in the group until kilometer 30 or resist until the wall was in charge of eliminating rivals. Daniel do Nascimento became free verse on the American streetss. The Brazilian broke any initial rhythm pact and went solo in the lead in the first kilometres. Without men to act as hare, some took his strategy for that of a kamikaze. However, the man who arrived with the third best mark of the participants exceeded expectations in one of the toughest marathons due to the complicated unevenness and humidity of the coastal town.
To the surprise of many, Daniel Do Nascimento led all his pursuers by more than two minutes after 24 kilometers. She had passed the halfway point of the test in unexpected weather in New York (1h02:22).

It was then that the eight applicants understood that it had not been an ordeal that the Brazilian had thrown without a net and they got serious about trying to recover ground. However, the only one capable of putting together a longer stride and faster cadence was Evans Chebet, the Kenyan who started on pole favorites. The African accepted the challenge and his new rhythm from kilometer 24 left him without teammates with whom to share the challenge of catching up with the Brazilian.
Since then, the victory in the marathon has focused on the ability of the Latin American to resist and on the management of strength and speed of the Kenyan to come back. Chebet made his strength clear by covering kilometer 30 to 35 in 14 minutes and 37 seconds.
To complete the list of news, Daniel Do Nascimento surprised at kilometer 29 by entering one of the organization’s portable toilets. It didn’t take long for him to get back on the road and pick up the pace he had lost in the last few kilometres, which encouraged the competition.

However, the first symptom had emerged that his body was not in the best condition. The 23 degrees of temperature, the humidity and the titanic initial effort hit his preparation. He endured running for a few more kilometers, but at kilometer 32 he collapsed in the middle of the road and the corresponding de facto abandonment due to physical problems.

The Brazilian’s collapse opened the door to Evans Chebet’s milestone with 10 kilometers to go. Without the unexpected leader ahead, he was able to dedicate himself to managing his advantage and to think that he was going to match Kipchoge in wins. In addition, he had the experience of knowing what it is like to win a great marathon (he won in Boston this week).
Of course, the unusual day could not miss the final emotion. Shura Kitata, second favorite of the test, appeared in the last kilometers as a threat to Chebet, who was losing strength and advantage. The Kenyan ran irregularly and looked back under pressure from the Ethiopian. He loomed an important rival and with a kilometer to go he came within a few seconds. However, the 2020 London Marathon winner did not have the reserve of energy for a final push and had to settle for a close second.

Three women run away and lose their lead
Among the women, the usual front-runner group held out until almost the kilometer 30 with a dozen athletes. Only then came the time to clear up doubts with a trio of chosen ones made up of Hellen Obiridebutant in a marathon at the age of 32, Gotytom Gebreslase y Viola Cheptoo.
When the three led their pursuers by 15 seconds, it seemed that they were going to share out the podium. But their times slowed down and that caused the moral and physical recovery of several athletes who would come back and end up becoming protagonists. First, the Israeli Lonah Salpeterthe runner with the best accredited mark at the start, returned to the lead to be the protagonist. Less than 10 kilometers to go once again counted as a candidate the winner of the New York marathon in 2010. Shortly after, another newcomer, the Kenyan Sharon Lokedi he joined the group in a move that would prove decisive.

There were more and more women coming back and then the Israeli opted to shake the tree with more speed. With 6 kilometers to gothe Salpeter rhythm he had dismounted Oriri and Cheptoo. Thus he pressed his two remaining rivals to the highest point of demand.
In the elimination race, the Ethiopian Gebreslase lost the wake of her teammates in a descent with 2,000 meters to go for arrival. Lokedi and Salpeter were alone in the lead heads-up before reaching the final slope that would choose the winner. It was time for the winner of the 2018 10,000-meter United States college championships (she was a student at the University of Kansas) to show off her skills.

Lokedi entered in the last kilometer with a three-second advantage, but Chemtai Salpeter did not give up and even threatened to sprint. He gritted the Kenyan’s teeth to retain her lead, breathed as she entered Central Park. Finally, the rookie in the distance crossed the finish line relieved and elated by his great victory in New York. After 42,195 kilometers he had won (2h23:23) for only a few seconds and became one of the eight athletes (men or women) capable of winning the test at its premiere.
