In a strange incident, Robert Dotson, 52, was killed by police at his home in the US state of New Mexico, after pointing his gun at them, although they discovered that they had mistakenly come to his home address.
According to the British Daily Mail, the tragic incident occurred on the evening of April 5, in Farmington, New Mexico, when city police officers responded to a domestic violence call.
But the Farmington police officers came to the wrong place. The officers went to 5305 on Valley View Street. They were supposed to go to 5308, which is just across the street.
The tragedy began when the officers knocked on the door and announced themselves, so no one answered the door because no one called the police, and then the owner of the house, “Dotson”, opened the door and raised his firearm, which made the police shoot him, and he fell dead on the spot.
Dotson’s wife began shouting, “Please help me, someone shot my husband!”
On Friday, the police department released audio and video recordings of the confrontation.
Police Chief Stephen Heapey said in a press release that his officers “recognize the seriousness of this incident” and pledged to release additional records and files in the coming weeks.
He added: “We will do everything we can to ensure a fuller understanding of what happened. Once again, we would like to express our condolences to the Dotson family and as Chief Constable, I would like to express how deeply sorry this tragedy has occurred.”
