Jakarta, April 16, 2023 (KAP/KNA) At the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo is calling on citizens to carefully protect themselves against Corona. According to Indonesian media reports (Sunday), the President emphasized that complete vaccinations and boosters are the key to avoiding a new corona wave with mutated pathogens.
Authorities expect around 120 million Muslims to travel to their families for the Sugar Festival, the largest number since the pandemic began. Ramadan ends on Friday evening (April 21st) this year. For the first time in three years, there are no corona restrictions on people’s mobility in Indonesia, which is predominantly Islamic.
The first cases of infection with new coronavirus variants have appeared in Indonesia, it said. The mutation has already caused an increase in Covid 19 cases in other countries. According to statistics from the Corona Center at Johns Hopkins University in the US, 74.5 percent of the 275 million Indonesians have been vaccinated against Corona at least once.
A new variant of the omicron virus is currently spreading, especially in India: “Arcturus” has already been detected in some cases in Germany. However, the current Covid weekly report from the Robert Koch Institute in Berlin continues to speak of a downward trend and a decreasing number of serious cases of illness.
