Skehan’s Free House Named London’s Best by Time Out Magazine

London’s pub scene is never short of high-quality establishments that serve the perfect pint and offer a welcoming atmosphere for locals and tourists alike. However, one Irish pub has recently caught the attention of many patrons in the city. The Irish pub is owned by a Limerick man and has just been named the best boozer in London. But what makes this pub so special and stand out from the rest of the pack? In this article, we will explore the story behind this hidden gem, its owner’s journey, and why it’s quickly becoming a must-visit destination for those looking for an authentic Irish pub experience in the heart of London.

Skehan’s Free House, located in Nunhead, a south-eastern neighbourhood in London, was recently named “a place of legend” and the number one pub in London by Time Out’s 2023 list of the best bars in the capital. The independent, family-run business owned by Bryan Fitzsimons, a Limerick man, is a fun and friendly neighbourhood pub that is popular with Nunhead locals, dedicated drinkers, art school students, and the Goldsmiths crowd.

According to Time Out, Skehan’s is a rarity in London as it is a family-run and independent pub. It attracts a diverse range of customers, from pensioners to local bands, chic fashion students, troupes of cheerful lads, and everyone in between. The pub has karaoke, folk-music nights, and terrific Thai food. It also serves perfect Guinness, which is not surprising as it is a proper Irish pub.

Speaking to the Irish Post about the achievement, Fitzsimons expressed his excitement and said that he thinks the reason for the pub’s popularity is because it matches the high standards of Irish pubs back home. He added that Skehan’s isn’t just a business, it’s their home, and they strive to look after it like someone would look after their own home.

Aside from its well-regarded Thai restaurant, Chai Garden, Skehan’s also offers traditional roast dinners every Sunday and its own burger night on Tuesday evenings using produce from local butchers. Its signature patty, the Skehanmac, is a crowd pleaser.

The pub has a quiz night every Thursday, with a pool table and dart boards for customers to enjoy. Customers can also watch major sports such as football, GAA, golf, rugby, and cricket on their two screens. Moreover, music fans can enjoy folk sessions every Sunday with some karaoke thrown into the mix once a month.

Skehan’s Free House is amongst the 3,500 bustling pubs serving customers in London, but its charm and popularity among customers make it worthy of this prestigious accolade. The pub is a true testament to the warmth and hospitality of the Irish in London. It represents a place where people from all walks of life can gather and come together in a fun, friendly, and relaxed atmosphere.
