The exhibition that was held for more than a month at the famous institution brought together close to a hundred works, mostly drawings, by artists from that 19th-century European nation, closely linked by fraternal, aesthetic, and philosophical ties.
The journey through the art of that time allowed us to appreciate how then the powerful Denmark came to be transformed into a relatively marginalized place, due to the social and economic impact of the Napoleonic Wars.
This situation generated a cultural and philosophical explosion that allowed Danish artists to develop a work considered brilliant by critics, since in tune with the historical moment, they explored themes such as place, identity and belonging, as well as the feeling of return home.
The MET exhibition was organized by guest curator Freyda Spira in collaboration with Stephanie Schrader and Thomas Lederballe; and in May it will travel to the Getty Center in Los Angeles, California.
