Ricky Tiedemann: The Blue Jays’ Young Hopeful

The Toronto Blue Jays’ best prospect at the moment, Ricky Tiedemann, continues to hold the attention of the team’s leaders, even though he plays in the AA caliber.

In fact, Jays manager John Schneider wonders what the southpaw is still doing at a lower level when he’s tipped to enjoy a recall with the big club this season.

For Schneider and the Blue Jays staff, there is no doubt that the 20-year-old left-handed pitcher is gifted and will be playing in the majors before long.

On Thursday, Tiedemann didn’t miss his outing as he made his first start of the season in a New Hampshire Fisher cats uniform. He worked three innings and struck out nine batters. His team couldn’t overcome the Boston Red Sox’s school club, the Portland Sea Dogs, but Tiedemann proved he was in a class of his own.

He made 49 shots, several of which reached 99 miles per hour.

It’s proven that teams don’t want to rush the development of their hopes, but it should be obvious that Ricky Tiedemann should climb the ladder at a natural pace by the end of this season.

Logically, he should find himself in the AAA caliber soon and adapt his pace against more seasoned hitters. The next step according to John Schneider may be a call back to Toronto to come and lend a hand to the pitching staff in place with the big club.

What impresses the Jays manager most about Tiedemann is his maturity and attention to detail. According to Schneider, he is already acting as a Major League pitcher and he likes that a lot.

Talking to him feels like talking to an adult.

The track record of the third-round pick in the 2021 draft speaks for itself: since making his debut in the Blue Jays branch system, Tiedemann is posting a 2.17 ERA in 78 innings and two thirds.

Unfortunately for him, he couldn’t fully assert himself at the last training camp in Florida, being bothered by shoulder pain.

The next few weeks will be decisive for the career of Ricky Tiedemann, but we bet that the leaders of the Blue Jays will not want to rush anything in order to see the young left-hander take the right road.
