Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said that he would take all possible measures to ensure the safety of the G7 summit and ministerial level meeting to be held in Japan this month.
Prime Minister Kishida told reporters today (16th), “As high-ranking officials from around the world gather, we must make every effort to ensure security and safety.”
The remarks came a day after an explosives throwing incident that appeared to be aimed at Prime Minister Kishida the day before.
Earlier, at around 11:30 am on the 15th, Prime Minister Kishida completed a site inspection in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan to support the by-election, and just before starting his street speech, a loud explosion occurred.
According to eyewitness accounts, a man threw a metal object that looked like a short iron pipe, followed by an explosion followed by white smoke.
Since then, Japanese police have arrested Yuji Kimura, who threw the explosives, and are currently investigating to determine the motive for the crime.
Meanwhile, G7 foreign ministers, including Secretary of State Tony Blincoln, started talks in Karuizawa, a city in central Japan, that day.
