Simeon Burke, a law student, has been placed on a “restricted regime” at Cloverhill jail in Ireland following concerns raised by a third party about a potential threat to his safety. Prisoners are placed on protection when the authorities become aware of a risk posed to them. As a result, Burke, the brother of schoolteacher Enoch Burke, who is currently in a long-running dispute with his former employer, has been placed alone in a cell and must spend the majority of his time alone. He is permitted to exercise and attend other prison facilities, however. Burke has been in prison since early last month, charged with a breach of the peace following incidents linked to his brother’s case. On Friday, the High Court ruled that the younger Burke was being lawfully detained.
