The Government of Gustavo Petro is strengthening its relations with China and this step was taken with an internal order that has all the components of a foreign policy move.
The Casa de Nariño urged public officials to refrain from having relations with Taiwan, arguing that the Colombian State adheres to the “One China” policy that the Xi Jinping administration applies in Asia.
The request was made through a directive signed by the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Francisco Coy, in February, at a time when he had taken office as acting foreign minister.
In this one reads that “I would like to draw your attention to the importance of embracing and applying the ‘One China’ principle by all civil servants belonging to the executive branch.”

“All officials of the public sector of the national, departmental and municipal order must refrain from having contact, meetings and / or demonstrations of support with officials from the region of Taiwan, China”, document continues.
