The West German town of Kerpen, where the brothers Michael and Ralf Schumacher were born and raised, is to be evicted and destroyed. The reason for this sad event is the expansion of the land mine for lignite, which is located in the northwest of the city.

Abandoned streets, empty houses with broken windows and destroyed doors. Where Michael Schumacher, the absolute legend of Formula 1, grew up, and where he later lived with his wife Corinna, is now eerily quiet.
According to German media, only a dozen people currently live in the town and will soon be relocated. Excavation work to expand the mine should begin in early 2024.
“I knew everyone here, I also remodeled my parents’ house. My daughter went to school with, for example, Ralf Schumacher. Our teacher already told us 50 years ago that one day we will have to move out.” one of the last residents, Josef Valder, told Focus.
Michael and Ralf Schumacher and their parents Rolf and Elisabeth were four of the approximately 1,700 people who once lived there. Michael and Corinna were married in a local church in August 1995.
During the excavation work, some local monuments will be preserved, including the go-kart track owned by the Schumacher family. It was on this track that the first race between Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton took place. It happened in 2001, when the German entered the finals of the World Karting Series.
In addition to these two seven-time champions, another future Formula 1 world champion, Nico Rosberg, also took part in the said race. Together with them, Vitantonio Liuzzi and Guido van der Garde also joined this trio, who after years also got into Formula 1, but did not have the same success as Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.
