“Majority of Americans Skeptical of Chinese President’s Actions on World Affairs, But Optimistic on Trade Cooperation, According to Pew Poll”

In recent times, China has been making significant strides in its role as a global superpower. However, a recent poll has revealed that a vast majority of Americans are critical of China’s global role, with over 80% expressing their dissatisfaction. Concerns range from China’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic to its human rights record and economic policies. This public opinion highlights the growing tensions between the two nations and underscores the need for better communication and cooperation in navigating the complexities of the global political landscape.

A recent poll conducted by the Pew Research Center discovered that a large portion of Americans are distrustful of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s ability to “do the right thing” when it comes to global affairs. Although a staggering 83% of respondents expressed unfavorable feelings towards China, over half remained optimistic that both nations could effectively collaborate on trade and economic policies.

According to the poll, one of the most pressing issues concerning Americans was China’s partnership with Russia. This sentiment was observed in March 2022, when the poll was taken, which coincided with Xi Jinping’s visit to Moscow and meeting with President Vladimir Putin. During his visit, Xi Jinping expressed desire for a new impetus in Russo-Chinese relations, and further emphasized China’s readiness to protect international law and the world order alongside Russia.

Additionally, tensions between China and Taiwan were described as a significant concern, with 47% of participants labeling the issue as a very serious problem. This was a 19-point increase from the number of people who felt the same way two years prior. Human rights in China were also highlighted as a primary source of worry, with around half of American respondents citing this as a major concern.

Despite these concerns, the Pew poll discovered two areas in which respondents expressed more positive views towards China. Over half of the participants stated that both countries could work together on trade and economic policies, without getting into specific policies. The only other area where a majority of respondents believed collaboration was possible was within student exchange programs.

Overall, the poll found that the number of Americans who view China as an enemy of the United States has increased by 13 points since last year and now accounts for four-in-ten Americans. However, a percentage of US adults remain uninformed about Xi Jinping and his policies. 13% of participants stated that they had never heard of the Chinese President, and this percentage doubled to 27% in those polled between ages 18-29.
