Lee Jeong-geun Admits to Being Nominated Due to Proximity with Song Young-gil, Citing Lobbyist Involvement

Circumstances have been revealed in which Lee Jung-geun, former vice secretary-general of the Democratic Party of Korea, who was sentenced to prison in the first trial for receiving 1 billion won in back money from a businessman, actively demanded money and valuables, emphasizing his friendship with former CEO Song Young-gil.

Looking at the first trial ruling on former Vice-President Lee’s case of mediation and violation of the Political Fund Act, former Vice-President Lee met businessman Park Mo in December 2019 and said that he was an aide to former CEO Song and that former CEO Song would soon take a leading position in the party. So, he asked for money, saying that the nomination was as good as winning.

Looking at the contents of the conversation with Park in July 2020, the former Vice-Chancellor said that Lee Seong-man sent 1 million won in donations, and Kang Rae-gu, the head of the Korea Auditors Association, was evaluated as ‘slow’.

Rep. Lee and Chairman Kang were recently seized and searched by the prosecution over suspicion of illegal political funds for the party convention.

In a conversation with Mr. Park in August of the same year, former vice president Lee also mentioned that he was a ‘lobbyist’ himself, and that he was thinking about learning business by doing well in lobbying.

On the 12th, former vice president Lee was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison and a fine of 908 million in the first trial on charges of receiving 940 million won from Park in exchange for various requests from December 2019 to January of last year. He was sentenced to tens of thousands of won.
