“The Lasting Impact of Crisis on Young People: A Sociologist’s Perspective”

Hurrelmann said on Deutschlandfunk that the past few years had left their mark on children and young people in particular. (dpa/Wolfram Steinberg)
Although the corona pandemic is over, these and other crises are still having an impact. The scientist referred to studies that showed that exceptional situations were perceived by many young people as “threatening their very existence”. This is evident, for example, in the education sector. Corona has created large gaps, and in some cases the feeling of incompetence has solidified. “Inequality has grown because some groups in the younger generation have managed to cope with the situation, while others have not,” explained the sociologist.

Hurrelmann describes the psychological consequences as dramatic. Fear, depression and aggression are the typical symptoms. Quite a few were looking for distraction, for example through computer games. Drug and alcohol use have also increased. “We estimate that ten percent of young people are permanently disturbed.”

Hurrelmann spoke of a huge need for psychological help.
He suggested thinking about group therapy. The aim must be to get young people out of their “crisis mode” so that they can lead a normal life again.
