Backstreet Boys’ Nick Carter faces sexual assault claims in LA lawsuit

Former Backstreet Boys member Nick Carter is facing allegations of sexual assault from fellow musician Melissa Schuman, who claimed that the singer sexually assaulted her in 2002. Schuman, a member of the pop group Dream, shared her story on her personal blog and in a subsequent interview, outlining the alleged assault and the impact it has had on her life. The lawsuit has sparked controversy and conversation about the issue of sexual assault in the entertainment industry, and highlights the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions. In this article, we will delve into the details of the allegations, the response from Carter and his team, and the implications of this case for the ongoing #MeToo movement.

Nick Carter, the famous Backstreet Boys singer, has been sued for sexual battery and assault by Melissa Schuman, a pop star who was a member of the US band Dream. According to the filing, Carter is said to have used his reputation to “groom, manipulate, and sexually exploit” Schuman. She claimed that Carter drugged her and sexually assaulted her at his apartment in 2003, when she was 18, and had contracted HPV following the assault. The disease is known to cause health problems such as cervical cancer and currently has no cure. Schuman filed the claim in Los Angeles and has requested a jury trial for damages that will be determined by the court.

In the lawsuit, Mr Carter was accused of inviting Ms Schuman to his Santa Monica apartment to play video games with a friend. He is said to have offered her an alcoholic drink spiked with flunitrazepam or a similar drug, followed by ordering her to masturbate him and forcefully having sex with her despite numerous objections. Following the alleged incident, Schuman contracted the human papillomavirus (HPV) and has reportedly suffered from mental and emotional problems, including depression, anxiety, loss of enjoyment of life, guilt, shame, fear, loneliness, nightmares, and PTSD. According to the claim, Ms Schuman attempted to keep her distance from Mr Carter, but he continued to “intimidate, blame and harass” her.

The claim read: “Defendant Carter’s conduct exceeded all bounds of decency and is odious and utterly intolerable in a civilized society”, adding that his actions, “including sexual assault and internet intimidation, caused emotional distress in Plaintiff, and this emotional distress was and continues to be severe.”

Although Ms Schuman first went public with the accusations in 2017, when she published a personal blog post titled “Don’t Worry, I Won’t Tell Anybody”, she told several people about the incident at the time, according to the documents. The claim also suggests that Carter used his fame to influence and overpower, play and toy around with a vulnerable Schumann.

The Dream singer has requested for a jury trial in the matter, and the damages will be determined by the court. Meanwhile, representatives for Mr Carter have not made any comments regarding the allegations.

It is not the first time Nick Carter has been accused of sexual assault. In November 2017, former Dream singer Melissa Schuman accused Carter of raping her in 2002 in another similar incident, trying to manipulate and overpower his victim. However, Carter denied the allegations and said that the sexual relations between them were consensual. In these cases, the law usually places the burden of proof on the victim to provide enough evidence for her claims, which is not always achievable, especially when the cases have already elapsed a reasonable time where gathering evidence can be debilitating.

In recent years, there has been a broader campaign targeting sexual harassment and assault in the music industry. In 2020, dozens of female musicians have come forward, calling out alleged sexually predatory behaviour by music executives, performers and producers as part of the #MeToo movement. Education and socio-cultural changes remain the most effective way to tackle this crisis, increasing awareness of sexual harassment and assault, and giving voices to the victims to seek justice.

The consequences of sexual harassment and assault can be profound and impact for years, affecting not only the victims but their families, partners, colleagues and friends alike. As cases continue to come out, it is hope for better solutions and justice for victims who have suffered for too long. It shows that no one is above the law, and everyone should be held accountable for their actions.

As the legal proceedings surrounding Nick Carter’s alleged sexual assault continues, it is important to remember that all allegations must be taken seriously and thoroughly investigated. It is crucial that justice be served, and that all parties involved receive fair and equal treatment. As fans and supporters, we must hold our idols accountable for their actions, and demand that appropriate measures are taken to prevent similar incidents from happening again. The Backstreet Boys have been a beloved music group for over two decades – time will tell how this case will impact their legacy. Whatever the outcome, we must prioritize justice and the safety of all individuals within the entertainment industry.
