“Macron: Being an Ally Shouldn’t Mean Blindly Following the US in Taiwan Conflict”

“Being an ally doesn’t mean being a vassal (..), doesn’t mean we don’t have the right to think for ourselves,” Macron said at a press conference in Amsterdam at the end of a state visit to the Netherlands.

Macron also said that “France is in favor of the ‘status quo’ in Taiwan” and supports a “peaceful resolution of the situation”.

The French president has drawn criticism for saying that Europe should not become a vassal and should avoid being drawn into the US-China conflict over Taiwan.

In an interview with journalists on the way back from a visit to China, Macron said that Europe risks being drawn into foreign crises and should rely less on the Americans for defense.
