What led to the controversy surrounding Kuwait’s blonde broadcaster “Fidda”?

The pioneers of social networking sites in Kuwait and the Arab world interacted with the first broadcaster using artificial intelligence technology, which was launched by a local electronic newspaper, and the matter sparked a wide wave of controversy.

The anchor, who appeared with her blonde features and her name was Fidda, sparked the comments of the tweeters, a few hours after the newspaper “Kuwait News” announced the first female anchor in the State of Kuwait working with artificial intelligence, calling her “Fidda”.

The presenter, “Fidda”, appeared in formal dress, addressing her speech to the audience, saying: “I am Fadda, the first broadcaster in Kuwait who works with artificial intelligence. What type of news do you prefer? Let’s hear your opinions.

Some of them considered that artificial intelligence would not be a competitor to TV presenters or announcers because it lacks many skills that only real humans can master.

A number of comments raised controversy about the appearance of the virtual anchor, because she is blonde in color and speaks in a dialect other than the Kuwaiti dialect, and tweeters demanded that she be developed in the future in terms of sound and shape.

And between the pros and cons of artificial intelligence
On the other hand, some comments considered that artificial intelligence technology for broadcasters has great benefits, including financial savings on salaries, and they also have the ability to work around the clock.

Some described this technological development as harmful and disturbing, and I was surprised by the saying that it might lead to the dispensation of people.

The co-director of the “Kuwait News” electronic newspaper, Abdullah Bouftin, said that the artificial intelligence anchor “Fida” is being tested to take advantage of its advantages in creating new and innovative content in the future.

Regarding the reasons for naming the virtual announcer by this name, he added that “Fadha” is an old popular Kuwaiti name that symbolizes the metal of silver, and that the stereotypical image in minds of robots is always silver in color and made of metal.

Bovetin said that the presenter’s appearance, “Fadda”, with her blonde skin and color, reflects the diversity that brings together Kuwaitis and foreign residents to represent everyone.

Bovetin confirmed that a specialized team will evaluate and monitor observations to take them into account, pointing to the possibility that Fadda will later use the Kuwaiti dialect to present its news on the newspaper’s account on the Twitter platform.

The report indicated, according to the BBC website, that technology could take over more than a quarter of work tasks in the United States and Europe, but in return it might create new jobs and boost productivity.
