The Wagner Group, a mercenary company, is suspected of crime… Russia “requires verification of authenticity”
(Istanbul = Yonhap News) Correspondent Cho Seong-heum = A video allegedly beheading a Ukrainian prisoner of war by Russian troops is circulating online. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky slammed the Russians, calling them “beasts.”
According to the US weekly Newsweek and CNN broadcasts on the 12th (local time), a video of a beheading scene that appears to have been filmed in Bakhmut, a battleground in eastern Ukraine, was recently posted on Russian social media.
In a video of about 1 minute and 40 seconds, which is known to have been filmed last summer, AFP reported that a man wearing a mask in camouflage clothes cut the throat of a man in military uniform. The video also recorded voices encouraging him and remarks that his head should be sent to the commander after the beheading.
The victim’s military vest was marked with a trident symbol of the Ukrainian army.
The US think tank Institute for Warfare (ISW) pointed to the Wagner Group, a private Russian mercenary company, as the perpetrators of the crime.
“The Wagner group continues to commit war crimes, including the beheading of a Ukrainian soldier in Bahmut,” the ISW said.
Another video, said to have been filmed recently, showed two Ukrainian soldiers lying on the ground with their heads and hands severed.
The Russians laughed at them and said, “Ukrainians killed Ukrainian soldiers.” Pro-Russian social media outlets claim that Ukrainian forces beheaded the bodies of their dead to prevent exposure.
“There is one thing that no one in the world should ever ignore: how easy it is for these beasts to commit murder,” Zelensky said in an online address.
“We will never forget anything and we will not forgive these murderers,” he added. “The world must see this video of the execution of Ukrainian prisoners.”
The Kremlin Palace said that the first priority was to determine the authenticity of the video.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in a conference call with reporters that the video was “terrible” and that “the authenticity of the video must be verified”.
