UN envoy in Sudan under threat of assassination

The international organization called for an investigation, coinciding with the fourth anniversary of the fall of Al-Bashir

The United Nations Transition Support Mission in Sudan (UNTAMS) expressed its concern about public threats to liquidate its head, Volker Peretz, and called on the Sudanese authorities to take legal action against the person who requested a fatwa authorizing him to kill the man.

“The mission is deeply concerned about a videotape circulated in the media showing a man speaking at a public event in Khartoum and requesting a fatwa allowing him to assassinate the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the President of I sent it to Sudan Volker Peretz, then the man volunteered to implement the fatwa himself.

The threat was issued by a bearded person while addressing a conference organized by the “Nidaa Ahl al-Sudan” group, which is affiliated with the supporters of the ousted President Omar al-Bashir, saying: “I am a donor to kill him so that the project of Islam does not die.”

The bulletin criticized what it called the language of incitement and violence, explaining that it will only lead to deepening divisions, and “will not deter the mission from carrying out its duties.” “While we welcome the voices condemning this video and its content, we call on the Sudanese authorities to take legal action and ensure a proper investigation,” she added.

This coincided with the Sudanese commemoration yesterday, the fourth anniversary of the fall of the Bashir regime on April 11, 2019. It also coincided with a phone call made by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken with the head of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, during which Blinken pledged to support the political process in Sudan, which aims to transfer power from the military to civilians, according to the “framework agreement” signed by the two sides on December 5.
