Michael Jordan’s Sneakers Sell for Record-breaking $2.2 Million at Sotheby’s Auction

A pair of sneakers worn in 1998 by the basketball star Michael Jordan for one nba finals during his last season with Chicago Bullsse were sold this Tuesday at an auction of Sotheby’s in New York for a record price of 2.2 million dollars.

Las Air Jordan XIIIblack and red and signed in silver ink by the American sportsman, became today the most expensive sneakers everthe auction house said in a statement.

“The result unprecedenteds of today is further proof that the demand for souvenirs from Michael Jordan continues to exceed and transcend all expectations,” said head of apparel and fashion collectibles, Brahm Wachter.

The rage for jordan memories was also reflected at the end of last year, when a T-shirt that he also wore in the same NBA final was sold for 10.1 million, marking the world record for any used sporting goods.

The season to which both garments belong is considered the most important of the athlete’s careeras it cemented his status as the best basketball player of all time, and has been nicknamed “The last dance” (The last dance) thanks to a documentary of the same name.

In the final in which Jordan wore the pair of tennis shoes, the most viewed in NBA history, the star scored 37 points in 40 minutes leading to the victory of the Chicago Bulls against the Utah Jazz (93-88) in the second half of the game.

Sotheby’s points out that Jordan has always shone in the pop culture and sportsbut interest has grown in 2023 because this year it references his famous number and the premiere of the film “Air”, which deepens its collaboration with Nike and in the “genesis of the famous slippers Air Jordan“.

The sneakers were sold as a single lot in an internet auction called “Victoriam”, which will give way to other memories of current iconic athleteslike Rafael Nadal, and past, like Kobe Bryant.

The company estimated that they would reach a price between 2 and 4 million dollars.

They have been on view for several weeks at the house headquarters in NYwhere they had their own room, completely in the dark except for a spotlight that fell on the display case where they were displayed and for some feline eyes projected on a wall next to various quotes from the athlete.
