Al-Akhbar (Nouakchott) – The Tunisian authorities arrested immigrants from sub-Saharan Africa, after they tried to storm the headquarters of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Tunisia, following the submission of a complaint by the legal representative of the UNHCR to the security services.

A communiqué to the Tunisian Ministry of the Interior stated that “the Public Prosecutor’s Office in the Court of First Instance in Tunisia authorized the opening of an investigation” against immigrants from sub-Saharan Africa, “in order to attempt to storm a diplomatic facility and damage it, and in order to assault with extreme violence a public official while performing his duties and in order to harm the property of others.” .

The source added that the migrants, who were protesting in front of the UN Commission headquarters, “were armed with stones, sticks, iron rods and gas canisters,” pointing out that “stones and solid materials were thrown at them by security units that intervened at the request of the Commission.”

The report spoke of “severe damage to housing, businesses and cars near the headquarters of the UN Commission”, which in turn expressed its “deep” dissatisfaction with the violent incidents that took place near its headquarters in Tunisia.

In a statement, the United Nations High Commissioner called for an immediate end to all “forms of violence,” and urged “a reduction in tension and its repercussions for everyone, including refugees and asylum seekers” in Tunisia.
