Dr. Faisal Al-Miqdad, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, met today Onassi Luto Funiwaka, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations for Security and Safety Affairs, and the accompanying delegation.
Minister Mekdad stressed that the existing cooperation with the Security and Safety Department of the United Nations General Secretariat and its representatives in Syria has prevented, over the years of the war, the UN crews from suffering any losses as a result of the criminal practices of armed terrorist groups.
Al-Miqdad pointed out the importance of this visit in terms of conveying the reality of the situation in Syria, and in particular the restoration of stability and security in most of its regions, and the importance of conveying the magnitude of the disaster that Syria is suffering, especially the devastation caused by the earthquake, and the need to lift the unilateral coercive sanctions imposed by the United States of America and other countries. Western war on Syria, which negatively affected the various aspects of the daily life of the Syrian people and increased their suffering.
In her turn, Onase Funiwaka praised the role played by the Syrian government in providing protection for the United Nations staff operating in Syria, expressing appreciation for the facilities provided by the Syrian government to the Office of Safety and Security during the crisis and earthquake disaster, which led to a better response, and confirmed the readiness of the United Nations to cooperate with Syria in various areas of interest to both sides.
The meeting was attended by Qusai Al-Dahhak, Director of the Department of International Organizations and Conferences, Caitlin Rau, Special Assistant to the Secretary-General of the Department of Safety and Security for United Nations Organizations, Khaled Al-Awar, Regional Officer for Syria – Department of Safety and Security for the Middle East and North Africa, and members of the accompanying delegation.
