Survivors said at least 15 women and several children were among the dead. The BBC cannot confirm the figures named.

Tuesday’s attack targeted a village in the Sagaing region that opposed the military government. Since seizing power in February 2021, the ruling military junta has increasingly used airstrikes against its opponents.

Sagaing communities have put up some of the strongest resistance to military rule in Myanmar, forming their own militant groups and running their own schools and clinics.

The civil war has killed thousands and displaced another 1.4 million. Almost a third of the country’s population also needs humanitarian aid, according to data from the United Nations (UN).
