The German national soccer record player Lothar Matthäus sees slight advantages for the English champions before FC Bayern’s quarter-final duel in the Champions League at Manchester City. “51:49 I would say. But only because Manchester is currently in the best form of the season. Bayern may not be at their best,” wrote the 62-year-old before the first leg this Tuesday (9 p.m./Prime Video) in a column for the TV channel Sky. It will “depend on Erling Haaland not scoring too many goals and defending him as a team.”
The former Bayern captain said that Joshua Kimmich’s provocative gesture of celebration after the 1-0 win at SC Freiburg showed that there was pressure at Bayern. He could “understand this from the emotion”, wrote Matthäus, “but a player from FC Bayern and the national team has to have a little better control and not act so exuberantly.” You can also see “how high the pressure is currently is. But that wasn’t necessary. I’m more discreet about that.”
After the away win in Breisgau, 28-year-old Kimmich cheered in the direction of the Freiburg fans with both clenched fists and explained that this was due to pure emotion.
