The Mystery of Fairy Circles: Solved by Indigenous Australians

Jakarta

Ada nature phenomenon, a circular bald patch in the middle of a meadow. Scientists call it the Fairy Circles and only recently solved the mystery.

Fairy Circles or Fairy Circles are scattered throughout the world and are widely found in the Australian prairies. The rings of bald earth between the meadows do look mysterious.

As if, this grass was cut by para peri from fairyland. But what actually happened?

Fairy Circle, originally reported by scientists in the 1970s in the Namib Desert, South Africa. Later, scientists did a lot of research.

In 2016, world scientists agreed that Fairy Circle was caused by a plant called spinifex, aka running grass, which competed for water and food sources, causing the land to become bald.

Spinifex likes to be called running grass because when it is detached from its parent plant, it will run around in the wind and form a ball. If you remember cowboy movies or those set in the desert, this is the ball-shaped grass that is often used in scenes depicting a lonely atmosphere.

But it turns out, scientists are wrong to guess this mystery. Reported by News.com Australia, Tuesday (11/4/2023) a team of scientists released the latest research on display in Nature Ecology & Evolution.

Dr Fiona Walsh, a member of the research team, said that those who correctly guessed the Mystery of the Fairy Circles were the Aborigines of Australia. The Australian native said Fairy Circle was caused by termites under the spinifex grass.

This information scientists seem to have ignored. Termites under spinifex grass appear to have been a source of food for Indigenous Australians in the past. Adult termites become moths which they eat.

Spinifex termite nests also store water. That’s why indigenous Australians have valued fairy circles from ancient times and have appeared in many of their paintings and art.

So it’s answered, this mysterious circle was not made by fairies. It is the work of termites from underground that causes the spinifex grass above it to bald.
