Charlotte Gainsbourg Opens Up About Coping with Sister’s Tragic Death

Charlotte Gainsbourg revealed in an interview with France Inter on April 7, how she experienced the death of her older sister, Kate Barry, and why she had chosen to go live in New York with her family a few months after the tragedy.

Kate Barry, daughter of Jane Birkin and composer John Barry, fell to her death from her apartment in the 16th arrondissement of Paris in December 2013.

Charlotte Gainsbourg had decided to leave Paris to mourn away from prying eyes and media pressure. She said she had the impression of “being reborn there”. For her, going to New York was a way to find herself and rebuild herself far from the pain and sadness that invaded her in France.

Today, Charlotte Gainsbourg is fulfilled in her new life in New York, even if she does not forget Paris and her family. She returns there regularly to see her relatives and to work on new professional projects.

In tribute to her sister Kate, she shared on her Instagram account a poem by James Joyce on the day her sister should have celebrated her 57th birthday. Charlotte Gainsbourg was able to find the strength to overcome this difficult ordeal and to continue to move forward while keeping the memory of her sister and the love she had for her.
