Cathal Mulvaney, a man in his 40s, drowned in Lough Ramor in Virginia, Co Cavan on 9 April. It is believed that the tragedy occurred while Mr Mulvaney was trying to rescue his dog from the water. Gardaí and emergency services were alerted to the situation and found an unresponsive Mr Mulvaney, who was taken to Cavan General Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. A post-mortem examination will be conducted at a later date. Tributes have been paid to Mr Mulvaney, a popular and well-liked man described by friends as a “true gentleman”. A garda spokesperson said that the death was being treated as a “tragic accident”.
