BRAMPTON, Ont. — Sarah Fillier scored two goals and an assist as Canada beat Japan 5-0 at the World Women’s Hockey Championship.
Brianne Jenner and Sarah Nurse had a goal and an assist, while Natalie Spooner scored Canada’s other goal. Emerance Maschmeyer stopped 11 shots in her first game of the tournament.
It was only the second time the two teams had faced each other since 2000, when Canada won the last game 9-0 at the World Championship last year.
Miyuu Masuhara blocked 31 shots for Japan and substitute Riko Kawaguchi 24.
After Jenner’s goal, scored in the opening minutes of the game, Fillier doubled Canada’s lead 8:03 into the game, scoring on a rebound.
Canada outshot 43-5 after 40 minutes.
Fillier scored the fifth goal with 3:19 remaining in the game.
