The character Pepper suffers from a genetic disease
Pepper, played by Naomi Grossman in American Horror Story, suffers from a rare genetic condition called microcephaly. The creators were inspired by a real historical figure. It is a neurodegenerative disorder causing a disproportionate size of the head to the body, which is usually significantly smaller. In the twentieth century, there was a man with the same disease in America, his name was Schlitzie.
The world learned about him because he used to perform in the circus, where the audience marveled at his unconventional appearance. But anyone who would expect that Pepper is a rather positive character for these reasons would be mistaken. In the second series, Pepper introduces herself as a mentally ill patient in an asylum called Briarcliff. In her apparent childlike innocence hides a murderer. She allegedly murdered her own brother’s offspring by drowning him and cutting off his ears.
The transformation of the actress took three hours
Make-up and costume designers really had to work hard to turn the lovely actress into the special Pepper. It is said that usually the actress spent up to three long hours in the dressing room before she became the character of the popular series. It was a test of patience for her and at the same time an experience of pushing her comfort zone. The only thing that the make-up artists didn’t have to redo in any way was her height. Even in real life, the actress is only 152 centimeters tall.
It has almost nothing to do with the character
If you look at the actress’ private photos and from the filming, you will probably find, like others, that the actress has nothing in common with the person she plays. The only exception is perhaps only the small figure of the protagonist and her film representative. That is why it is so admirable that Naomi managed to portray such a controversial villain with clarity and believability.
