After the scandal broke out in the Greek media, Paweł Raczkowski decided on Sunday to take a voluntary test for alcohol in his blood – informed Paweł Gołaszewski from “Piłki Nożna”. As it turns out, the test gave a result of 0.00.
Paweł Raczkowski and his assistants were to host the hit game of the Greek league between AEK Athens and Aris Thessaloniki. According to the publication of the Greek media, the judges were supposed to be drunk already at the Athens airport. “They caused problems with their behavior,” we read. As reported by the Greeks, the Polish arbitrators were to get into an argument with fellow passengers already on board the plane, where they were supposed to drink a lot of alcohol. Then they were about to commit scandalous behavior.
These reports were quickly verified. Other Greek media began to report that the Polish judges were not drunk at all, nor did they provoke any incidents. Paweł Raczkowski himself, in conversations with the Polish and Greek media, as well as in a special statement, strongly denied the allegations, adding that he was to be spat at and attacked by a drunk “fan” of Panathinaikos.
The head of Polish referees, Tomasz Mikulski, in an interview with Sport.pl, added that the referees from Poland were removed from the AEK-Aris match and replaced by Greek colleagues by the head of Greek referees Steve Bennett due to “high media pressure”. The same later appeared in the official announcement on the PZPN website.
Even the direct rival of AEK in the fight for the title – Olympiacos reacted to the information about the change of referees – Olympiacos, who wrote about the “coup d’état” and “another poorly written performance by the Gang that runs the EPO and KED (Greek federation and Greek referees – editor’s note)” . “Firstly, on board the plane, the judges were not drunk according to Aegean (airlines – ed.). Secondly, according to tapes from the airport and the police, someone shouted at the judges and hit the judge in the back,” the statement added.
