Ajit Pawar, the senior leader of India’s Nationalist Congress Party, has said that Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) are trustworthy and that they cannot be manipulated by a single person. The comments contradict accusations from opposition parties that the Bharatiya Janata Party wins elections by hacking EVMs. Pawar’s remarks, which followed a query on an editorial that made those hacking claims, stressed that polls outcomes come from the mandate of the people. He also noted that the argument that EVMs are defective has been proven false already, adding that if voting machines were rigged, chaos would ensue in India.
