Thurgauer undergoes a sex change in Thailand: does the health insurance company have to pay for it?
A trans person is arguing with her insurance company about the cost of male-to-female sex reassignment surgery. She had the genital surgery done in Thailand because the risk of complications is lower there. The Federal Supreme Court is now sending this case back to the Thurgau Administrative Court.
She was born in the wrong body. A Thurgau transperson born in 1974 did not identify with the male gender assigned at birth. Today she is a woman fighting in court for the cost of her gender reassignment surgery. Recently she achieved a partial victory. The Federal Supreme Court referred her case back to the Thurgau Administrative Court. It’s about 18,300 francs plus interest. That’s how much the genital adjustment operation that the Thurgau woman underwent in Thailand cost.
