Delhaize Faces Turbulent Easter Weekend as Staff Protests Privatization Plan for 128 Stores

It promises to be a turbulent Easter weekend for Delhaize. The staff has been campaigning against the plan to privatize 128 stores for almost a month now. In recent days, the actions have increased again. Yesterday Delhaize announced that it would do “everything possible” to keep the stores open during this long weekend, which is traditionally important for supermarkets.

At least 60 of the 128 stores under own management did not open this morning. There were again 19 in Flanders, where there has been less willingness to strike in recent weeks. But in recent hours, the management has allowed most of those stores to be opened by bailiffs. Six stores in Flanders are now closed. In Brussels and Wallonia, the interventions had less effect: 17 and 25 shops, respectively, still remain closed there.
