According to Tony Donlan- a spokesperson of the UNITED Metal Recycling (UMR) group- plans have been made to develop a boutique hotel, language school and holiday home complex at the Cahercon site, which has now been acquired by the company. The property is expected to be in operation by summer 2024, with potential for 70-100 job opportunities. It has been emphasised that the redeveloped property will not be used for emergency accommodation, and that the goal is to provide employment for the locals. Donlan stated that the company has a track record of taking on rebuilding projects of out-of-use, derelict buildings for the purpose of generating new economic activity.

UMR has previously been involved in projects like the sites formerly occupied by Molex and Avara in Shannon, and Cahercon will be developed along similar lines. Plans for a maritime training facility at the Cahercon site did not come to fruition, and the premises has remained unused for years. However, Donlan has big plans for the property, and sees the 3.7 km shoreline associated with the complex as offering plenty of opportunity for outdoor activities like water sports. Among other amenities, a swimming pool and leisure centre will be provided on the site.

Donlan has talked about his previous involvement in business ventures that have revitalised previously rural areas, citing one specific example where a burnt-out bar was transformed into a thriving establishment that employs over 40 people. He believes that the mighty Cahercon holds similar potential for bringing back economic activity and employment to the local area.
