“We didn’t have to build Potemkian villages,” because the requirements for the “NRW Prize for Cultural Education” also matched the Gisbert von Romberg Vocational College without bending, as teacher Ingo Schwenken reports. The training course for educators has been working with the cultural office since 2008 and in this way creates cultural projects with Dortmund daycare centers that the students of the college design themselves. The school has now received EUR 20,000 from NRW School Minister Dorothee Feller for this concept.
The final project
What is special about the place where we live? The children of the daycare center on Strohnstraße recently asked themselves this question with students from the Hacheneyer Kolleg. Together with the children, the prospective educators developed and produced a film that focused on formative Hörde places such as the sculpture of the standing man or the slim Mathilde in downtown Hörde. The little filmmakers were able to see the result last Friday in their day care center.
Every year, the students who have chosen to focus on “cultural education” work on such a project with a day-care center. Film as an art form forms a new category, since previous work has concentrated on theatre, literature, fine arts, music and dance.
In order to acquire the necessary “real competence to act”, to use Schwenken’s words, the students take part in workshops in the individual sections during the school year. The necessary contacts are established by the culture office, which also supports the school financially with the workshops.
Build on the cultural day-care centers
In 2008, the cultural office approached the school to promote cultural education in Dortmund for the youngest. Among other things, this also resulted in the concept of the culture daycare center, which was launched in 2018 and last year was awarded the German Daycare Prize. While the cooperation received 10,000 euros in this context to further expand the culture day-care centers, the Gisbert von Romberg vocational college now has a further 20,000 euros at its disposal to make future work with the students interesting and goal-oriented.
