In Saxony, refugees from Ukraine are now allowed to keep their license plates until June. A special rule has been extended. The Ministry of the Interior had previously threatened to shut down vehicles.
Since the beginning of the war, more and more cars with Ukrainian license plates can be seen on German roads. But that should change soon, as a corresponding special rule will soon expire. The cars must then be registered in this country and provided with a German license plate. Or not, because Saxony has summarily extended the exemption until June 30th.
Cars with a valid Ukrainian registration and sufficient liability insurance may take part in traffic until then, as Transport Minister Martin Dulig (SPD) explained on Monday in Dresden. “I am pleased that we were able to find an uncomplicated solution together for those affected who seek protection with us, so that they can continue to be mobile in Germany without incurring large costs.”
Despite the threat of closure: Ukrainian license plates remain permitted in Saxony
In particular, adequate liability insurance is an important factor. So far, drivers have often been left at their expense in an accident with a car with Ukrainian license plates. That was the case in more than 100 cases, writes the Bild with reference to the General Association of Insurers (GDV).
In Saxony, there were already threats to simply shut down cars with Ukrainian license plates as soon as the special rule expired. “There is no more leeway here, we treat these vehicles like any other without valid registration or insurance, shut them down,” explained the Saxony Ministry of the Interior at the request of the Bild.
Cars with Ukrainian license plates are usually sufficiently insured
This worst case has now been averted by extending the special regulation. In any case, re-registration – or registration in Germany – would only have become a problem for very few. Most vehicles with Ukrainian license plates are adequately insured, as the association Verkehrsopferhilfe dem MDR communicated.

However, it is still unclear whether the exemption will also be extended in other federal states. The conference of transport ministers has already called on the federal government to find a long-term solution for a uniform approach. (With material from the dpa)
