Pakistan has responded to India’s notice seeking a review and modification of the Indus Waters Treaty. Pakistan is committed to the treaty, said a foreign ministry spokesperson. India served the notice after accusing Pakistan of “intransigence” in handling disputes. The modification will be discussed at the Permanent Commission of Indus Waters level after Pakistan hears India’s concerns, according to reports. India was disappointed by the appointment of a Court of Arbitration, which it believes contravenes the graded mechanism prescribed in the treaty, and has not cooperated with the court.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has received a letter from Pakistan in response to India’s notice seeking a review and modification of the 62-year-old Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) with regard to the management of cross-border rivers, according to ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi. The letter, forwarded by Pakistan’s foreign ministry and written by its Indus Water Commissioner, states that Pakistan is ready to listen to India’s concerns regarding the treaty. Pakistan has confirmed its commitment to the implementation of the IWT, which India sought to amend due to Islamabad’s “intransigence” in handling disputes.
