Officers tracked the group to an address in Sebokeng, a township in the south of the city, in the morning, police said. There was an exchange of gunfire.
Eight suspects were pronounced dead at the scene and the ninth died in hospital. Three other people were reportedly injured and required treatment at a nearby hospital. The group has been suspected of being behind a series of armored vehicle heists in Gauteng province. According to police, six guns, explosives and four cars were confiscated at the scene.
