“The New US Ambassador, Kenneth Merton, Arrives in Bulgaria”

U the new US ambassador to Bulgaria Kenneth Merton, claimed by the Senate, arrived in Bulgaria today and met with the embassy staff, the US diplomatic mission in Bulgaria announced on Facebook, BTA reported.

President Joe Biden has nominated Kenneth Merton to be the new US ambassador to Bulgaria in June 2022, replacing Hero Mustafa, whose term expired this spring.

Kenneth Merton, born 1961, is a member of the High Diplomatic Service with the rank of “career minister”. From October 12, 2021 to April 11, 2022, he is the acting chargé d’affaires of the US Embassy in Haiti, according to a report from the Reference Department of BTA.

He previously served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs and then held the same position in the Bureau of Global Talent Management. In addition, Merton served as Ambassador to Croatia (2012-2015), to Haiti (2009-2012), and Deputy Executive Secretary of the State Department.

Merton received his undergraduate degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and then completed his master’s degree at American University in Washington, DC.

He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Grand Cross of Honor awarded by the Haitian government for his support after the 2010 earthquake.

Merton is fluent in Haitian Creole, French, German and Spanish.
