Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the bronchi. During an attack, the muscles of the bronchi begin to contract uncontrollably, which causes a narrowing of their lumen and problems with the flow of air into the lungs. Bronchial asthma can occur at any age, although the onset usually occurs in early childhood. The causes of the disease are usually divided into two groups: allergic and non-allergic.

1. Allergic asthma typical for children. It can be provoked by various inhaled allergens – for example, grass pollen, tree pollen, animal hair or mites.

2. Non-allergic asthma most often develops in adults. It is not associated with the adverse effects of allergens and is less treatable. According to experts, there is no single cause for the development of non-allergic asthma. However, there are known risk factors that may contribute to its development:

  • genetic predisposition,

  • obesity,

  • female,

  • frequent SARS in childhood,

  • smoking, including passive smoking.
