Traffic Chaos at De Ruijterkade: Municipality Looks for Solution for Coaches

Last week the Oosteraccess was closed for work and motorists have to drive via the De Ruijterkade. Coach drivers are allowed to let their customers off there, but then the buses have to turn around. Because work is also being done on that street, the so-called turning loop is gone and the buses turn around at the viaduct, so that traffic has to be stopped by traffic controllers.

A local resident speaks of a ‘huge congestion’. “You could have thought of this. I think. I already sent an email last week. It wasn’t as bad as it is now. But they don’t do anything about it.”

The VVD asked questions during the city council meeting this afternoon about the traffic chaos, which has been going on for days now. “AT5 is full of messages about people who didn’t make it to their flight, can’t get out of the parking garage, it’s just becoming a bit of a drama,” said VVD councilor Daan Wijnants.

The alderman replied that De Ruijterkade is only intended to be used for local traffic and that many motorists should therefore actually take a different route. The signs in the wider area will therefore be adjusted. She also acknowledges that the coaches cause extra delays, which is why a place is being sought for another coach stop.

“It has my full attention,” said Van der Horst. “We are monitoring it and I really hope there is a reduction very soon.” Yellow lines have now been sprayed in front of the parking garage and if that does not help, traffic controllers may also be placed there. It is not yet known when the temporary stop for the coaches will be found and prepared.
