Jakarta –
Last April 1, Asus posted a video showing off a handheld console called the ROG Ally. Coupled with an Asus employee’s LinkedIn posting calling Ally an “A-lie”, this console was considered an April Fool’s joke.
But then Asus confirmed that ROG Ally this is not a joke, but a real device. They also asked people to wait for more information about this handheld console, as quoted by detikINET from The Verge, Wednesday (5/4/2023).
According to Asus, the ROG Ally is a handheld PC running Windows 11 and running AMD’s custom Ryzen accelerated processing unit (APU). Similar to the Aerith SoC used in Steam Deckbut Asus claims that the SoC APU it uses has up to 2x the performance of Steam Deck because it uses the latest RDNA 3 architecture and Zen 4 CPU.
Yes, when ROG Ally is released, it looks like it will be the closest competitor to Steam Deck, which offers a portable PC gaming experience. So far, the Steam Deck is a handheld console device that dominates this realm, because there aren’t many other products with a similar concept.
Then there are two YouTubers who have tried this ROG Ally, namely Dave2D and Linus Tech Tips. From the two, it was revealed that ROG Ally has a body that is smaller, lighter and flatter. The second weight is 60 grams adrift and a slightly smaller body but with the same screen size (different aspect ratio, 16:10 vs 16:9).
The screen resolution is also different, namely 720p vs 1080p. The ROG Ally screen measures 7 inches with 1080p resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, and up to 500 nits brightness. In addition, according to Dave2D, the ROG Ally fan is much quieter than the Steam Deck, which is often complained about because the fan is noisy.
ROG Ally can also be connected to the Asus ROG XG Mobile external GPU for more powerful graphics capabilities and can use output to an external monitor.
But unfortunately so far there has been no information regarding the promised very competitive price and release date and availability. Considering that Asus is a global company whose scope is wider than Valve, the availability of this ROG Ally should be better than Steam Deck. Hopefully yes, detikers.
