“New Robot System Enhances Precision in Complex Reconstructive Surgeries”

The new system, linked to a surgical microscope, follows the doctor’s movements and performs them with up to 20 times greater precision, using micro-instruments. It filters out even minimal tremors, reducing the risk of tissue damage and accelerating patient recovery.

The robot can be used in particular for complex plastic and reconstructive procedures, such as in the case of lymphedema or breast cancer, where the surgeon must reconnect very fine anatomical structures, such as blood vessels, nerves or lymphatic vessels, including the diameter is often less than 0.8 millimeters.

A first lympho-venous bypass was performed with the robotic arm by the plastic and reconstructive surgery team of UZ Brussel, on a patient suffering from lymphoedema in the arm following breast cancer. The diameter of the operated vessels was 0.4 millimeters.
