Hundreds of people with divided opinions and media from around the world arrived around the State Supreme Court in Lower Manhattan, where former President Donald J. Trump was indicted.
“We have many opinions but at the end of the day justice has to happen,” said Arnulfo Hermes.
“The truth is, I don’t know, we don’t know what’s going to happen, but whatever happens, we’re going to continue standing up and supporting him,” said Lito, a Trump supporter.
The scene, quite picturesque as expected, began very early with the presence of police reinforcements who set up barricades in order to keep the public with divergent opinions apart.
Trump arrived around 2 p.m. in a convoy of eight black pickup trucks guarded by agents from his secret service.
Before entering the court, to formally surrender to justice, he greeted those who surrounded the building.
Once inside, they took his fingerprints and a mug shot.
The judge of Colombian origin Juan Manuel Merchán read the 34 crimes for falsification of commercial documents that are imputed to him. Trump, unsurprisingly, pleaded not guilty to all of them.
The evidence presented by the Manhattan District Attorney documents a series of payments made between August 2015 and December 2017, which include large sums of money to buy the silence of two women with whom he allegedly had extramarital sex. One of them is Stormy Daniel, adult film actress.
The appearance lasted about an hour and this was shared by some of the attendees outside the court.
“The more they attack him and want to put him in jail, the more he will have the support of all Latinos. They are silent, but I tell you, every Latino I know is for Trump,” said Ana Vía.
“I am here neither for nor against,” said Dinick Martínez.
Trump, who is also a candidate for the Republican primary to run for the presidency for the third time, left the compound at around 3:30 in the afternoon, heading to the Laguardia airport to return to his residence in Mar-a-Lago, Florida. .
Among the public, there were many American flags, people in costumes, hats for and against, even rolls of toilet paper with his face.
Long after Trump’s departure, groups of people remained in the area, many to show their support, others to speak out against him, and others simply out of curiosity. The case and the expectation continue.
