“The Fable Man: Steven Spielberg’s Personal Portrait of Childhood and Filmmaking”

USA 2022, 151 Min., OmU, Regie: Steven Spielberg, mit: Paul Dano, Gabriel LaBelle, Michelle Wiliams ua

When little Sammy Fabelman is taken to the cinema by his parents Burt and Mitzi for the first time, it leaves a lasting impression. The images frighten and fascinate him. His own camera helps him to process the impressions. Years later, Sammy is a teenager who can hardly be separated from his camera. To the delight of his mother, who is an artist herself, and with the help of his three little sisters, he makes more and more films, which soon get bigger and involve the whole local scout group. But through the camera lens, he also becomes aware of the problems smoldering between his parents. When the family has to move again due to the father’s new job, they can no longer be suppressed.

Director Steven Spielberg’s films such as “Jaws” (1975), “ET” (1982), “Jurassic Park” (1993) and “Schindler’s List” (1993) filled the cinema halls. With “The Fable Man” Steven Spielberg took his own life as a child and youth as a template. The result is a personal portrait that tells of an American-Jewish childhood and at the same time a cinematic homage to family relationships that have shaped his life and career, but also to his fascination with filmmaking.
