The House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Puan Maharani announced on April 4 that the 2024 general election (Pemilu) will be held as planned, after the House passed a regulation in lieu of law (Perpu) of Law No.1/2022. The passing of the General Election Perpu was a follow-up on the establishment of four new autonomous regions of Papua, and it includes several changes to the norms in the General Elections Perpu. These changes include the formation of election organizers in the new autonomous region provinces, the institutional strengthening of holding general elections, and the arrangement of electoral districts and the allocation of seats for members of DPR, Provincial DPRD. The Perpu also includes adjustments to electoral districts and adjustments to the number of seats for Provincial DPRD members as an implication of population growth. The Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian elaborated that the Pemilu Perpu is the House and government’s commitment to providing legal certainty for the implementation of the 2024 general election stages.
