Björklöven Center Fredric Weigel Suspended for Semi-Final Match Against Djurgården

UME. Fredric Weigel misses tonight’s semi-final against Djurgården.

The Björklöven center is suspended in a game for a slashing in Sunday’s game at Lukas Vejdemo.

– Not what I expected. But now everyone knows what level we can expect in the remainder of the playoffs, both in terms of decisions and registrations, says Per Kenttä, general manager of Björklöven.

Fredric Weigel was in the center of the action in the first semi-final match between Björklöven and Djurgården on Sunday. He was committed to Djurgården’s goalkeeper Carl Lindbom the entire match and was a constant distraction for the Stockholmers.

In the opening match he also had a duel with Lukas Vejdemo which was reviewed after the match.

The pair of referees Alexander Österberg and Kristoffer Folkstrand missed the slashing against Vejdemo on the ice, but now Fredric Weigel has been subsequently reported to the disciplinary board.

– It is surprising that you are reported for a slashing. Then I’m not saying it’s not slashing, I’m not denying that it is slashing. I don’t think it’s pretty and it was a clear sending off that the referees missed, but then whether it’s two minutes or five minutes I can’t judge. It was an identical incident in a quarter-final between Mora and AIK where there were five minutes on the ice, but no report. I expect this one won’t proceed to shutdown either. Then you can look for slashings over the wrists all season, which also means a great risk of injury. In that case we are wrong, in that case you have to report all slashings, said Björklöven’s head coach Viktor Stråhle to Sportbladet in connection with the report to the Disciplinary Committee.

A few hours before the descent on Tuesday, the verdict came for the fit Weigel:

A match in suspension.

The reason why the decision and suspension comes so close to relegation is that the Hockeyallsvenskan does not have the same favorable agreement with the Swedish Ice Hockey Association as the SHL has.

Erik Ryman, sports manager Hockeyallsvenskan explains:

– Depends on the fact that we have different agreements with the Ice Hockey Association. And this is high prio for us to change this and we have mentioned it 100 times to SIF. We are in negotiations with them now and will try to get things done as quickly as possible.
– Sometimes DN’s meetings sync up better, but it depends on whether there have been notification cases from SHL where our case can also be processed. But sometimes, as with Wiegel now, it happens on match day. And that’s not good. Hope it’s resolved by next season.

Fredric Weigel.
