The presence of immigrants in Huelva has been a constant for some years in those municipalities in which an intensive and export agricultural production model has been concentrated that demands a large amount of manpower in a short space of time, although this initial reality has been transforming and the migratory phenomenon is a stable reality in most of the municipalities of the province.
Faced with this new reality, many teams see the Primary Care service overwhelmed, both quantitatively and qualitatively due to the nature of the new demands (processing of residence and work permits, management of health documentation, employment guidance…) that reach the offices of the Caritas.
The reality of immigration in the province encompasses two different situations or starting points; On the one hand, there is the reality of all those immigrants who have been arriving in these areas and who are already residing permanently with their families in the area; and on the other, the large temporary influx of people who come in search of employment during the months of the strawberry agricultural campaign -from February to May approximately- or citrus fruits, many of them without a prior contract and without insured accommodation. . This makes them have to live in shanty towns.
