Diaz, who interned in 2015 and 2016 at a carmaker’s factory in Fremont, northern California, was still promised $137 million in damages in 2021. But Tesla appealed, after which a judge ruled last year that this amount was indeed too high. The damages were reduced to $15 million. However, Diaz did not agree and filed a new lawsuit.
The compensation determined on Monday is still far below that. It consists of $175,000 for emotional damages and $3 million as punishment. There is a good chance that Diaz’s lawyers will appeal again to at least get to the $ 15 million compensation promised last year.
In California, Tesla risks multiple lawsuits over racism in the workplace. Several black (former) employees have spoken out about this.
