Sinn Féin TD Eoin Ó Broin has defended sharing an image on social media that depicts Garda members and private security at a thatched cottage, which appears to compare a forced eviction in 2018 to evictions during the famine. Garda representatives and Government politicians criticised Ó Broin for sharing the artwork, with Minister for Justice Simon Harris calling it “offensive, inappropriate and disrespectful”. Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors general secretary Antoinette Cunningham said the artwork misrepresented the role of the Garda, which is to prevent a breach of the peace during evictions. Ó Broin insisted on Twitter that he had not intended to offend, criticise or cause a political dispute with his post.
